Pancake Night is a typical Newfoundland calendar custom held on Shrove Tuesday (the night before Lent). Everyone tries to get rid of all the foods banned during Lent, like meat products, butter, and eggs. People cook pancakes to get rid of these products, and objects with symbolic value are cooked in the pancakes. It's a tradition for children to participate in a divinatory game, in which whatever item the child receives in his or her pancake symbolizes a specific life path the child will follow.
