Colonists first brought the English practice of cooking noodles and adding cream sauce and cheese, but Thomas Jefferson brought the first macaroni machine to America in 1789. A Frenchman built the first American industrial pasta factory in Brooklyn in 1848, laying his spaghetti on the roof to dry.
